When the French-American photographer Andreas Feininger documents this newly built residential building in Södermalm, Stockholm, the kitchen table is placed near the window facing the street. The kitchens have guillotine windows that can be opened straight upwards. When opened, the glass disappears, and the street outside comes into the apartment.
The building in the quarter Tegelslagarenis the first project of architects Sven Backström and Leif Reinius, who would go on to be among the most influential housing architects in Sweden. The house, completed in 1937, contains 60 apartments. The materials used, such as Swedish green marble for the windowsills and teak in the ground floor entrances, are solid and chosen for their durability.
