  Uppgifter om fyndplats, fynddatum mm saknas då lädret tidigare saknat fyndnummer.

  Över 1400 skor- och stöveldelar har hittats på skeppet Vasa. Mellan slutet av 1500-talet och mitten av 1600-talet dominerades modet av tre olika typer av skodon. Dessa typer var slejfskon, stöveln och tofflan, som alla är representerade i Vasas fyndmaterial. Slejfskon knöts med två slejfar över foten. Stöveln från tidigt 1600-tal hade ett väl anpassat skaft gjort av mjukt läder som kunde vikas ner över skaftet. Tofflorna saknade bakkappa och hade ofta tjockare sulor gjorda av trä- och kork-material. Vissa skor tillverkades fortfarande som distinkta höger- eller vänsterskor, men från cirka 1580 hade det blivit vanligare att tillverka skorna på en rak läst. Skorna blev höger- och vänster-fotade genom användning. I slutet av 1500-talet blev det populärt med skor med klack i Västeuropa, dessförinnan hade skorna varit flatsulade. Både flatsulade och klackade skor har hittats på Vasa. Olika typer av läder kunde användas till alla delar av skorna. Det förekom också att björknäver användes som mellansula för att förbättra isoleringen och göra sulan mer vattentät. Tofflor hade ofta både trä och kork i sulan.

  Skor, stövlar och tofflor består av flera komponenter. Den övre delen. Ovanlädret, täcker foten och benet. Ovanlädret fästs vid en bindsula som utgör huvudkomponenten under bärarens fot. Bindsulan fästs vid en yttersula som har kontakt med marken, ibland med mellansulor däremellan. Skorna på Vasa följer huvudsakligen två konstruktionstraditioner när det gäller material och teknik för att fästa ovanlädret och bindsulan till yttersulan. I svenskskon har den nedre delen av ovanlädret vänts utåt och placerats på bindsulan för att sedan sys fast direkt på bindsulan och sulan. I randskon är den övre delen sydd på bindsulan och ett mellanlager av läder – den del som kallas rand. Sulan är sedan fäst vid randen. I tofflor är randen bredare och täcker träplattformen mellan bind- och yttersulan.

  Well over 1400 shoe and boot parts have been found on Vasa. Between the end of the 16th century and the mid 17th century, three types of footwear dominated fashion. These were the latchet shoe, the boot and the pantable slipper, all of which are represented in the Vasa material. The latchet shoe was tied through two straps over the instep. The boot of the early 17th century had a closely fitted shaft of soft leather which could be turned down at the top. Slippers, also called pantables, lacked quarters and often had thicker soles of wood and cork. Some shoes were still made as distinct lefts and rights, although from ca 1580 it was increasingly common to make shoes on an “upright” or straight last, and the shoes would become matched to the left and right foot through wear. Elevated heels first gained popularity throughout western Europe in the late 16th century; before then shoes were flat soled. Both flat soles and elevated heels are seen in the Vasa shoes. Leather of various types could be used for any part of the shoe, but some shoes include birchbark midsole layers for insulation or waterproofing, and pantables often had wood and cork in the sole.

  A shoe, boot or pantable consists of several main elements. The upper covers the foot and leg, and is attached to an insole, the basic element under the wearer’s foot. The insole is attached to an outer sole, which contacts the ground, sometimes with midsoles in between. There are two main construction traditions in the Vasa material for joining the upper and insole to the outersole. In stitch-down shoes, the lower edge of the upper is turned outward on top of the insole and stitched directly to the insole and outer sole. In randed or welted shoes, the upper is sewn to the insole and an intermediate strip of leather, the rand or welt. The outer sole is then stitched to the rand or welt. In pantables, the rand is a wider strip to cover the platform of wood and cork between the insole and outer sole.
